Astarte Medical
A clinical decision-support platform that puts neonatal nutrition research in front of clinicians at the point of care.
What was in the way
Astarte Medical held a decade of neonatal growth and nutrition research, but it lived in analysts' notebooks and static reports. Neonatal intensive care teams needed the same insight during a ward round — in seconds, on a shared terminal, alongside the patient record. The existing pipeline took days to refresh and could not be traced back to source, which made it unusable in a clinical setting.
How we worked
Three decisions that shaped the engagement.
We began with four weeks embedded in the research team and two site visits to NICU wards, mapping how nutrition decisions are actually made and where a system could realistically intervene without adding clicks to a clinician's day.
The platform was rebuilt around an event-sourced data pipeline: every measurement carries provenance back to its source system, every derived figure records the model version that produced it. That traceability was the requirement that shaped the architecture — without it the tool could not be used clinically or defended in review.
The clinical interface was designed for density and speed. Keyboard-first navigation, a fixed information layout so position carries meaning, and a two-second budget from login to patient cohort view, enforced in CI.
What changed
Measured against the baseline recorded during discovery.
The platform is in daily use across partner NICU sites. Data that previously took days to prepare now refreshes continuously, and cohort analysis that occupied an analyst for a week is available to a clinician during a ward round.
“The traceability work was the difference between an interesting dashboard and something we could actually take onto a ward.”
